The fortress Ovech is located in the Eastern part of the town of Provadia, 32 km from Asparuhovo village. In the historical documents, the fortress is mentioned under several names. The oldest given name is coming from Byzantine – Provat. The Bulgarians have given this fortress the name of Ovech, meanwhile the Turks call it Tash Hisar (translated – “The stone fortress”). Throughout the centuries, the fortress was inhabited by Tracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians and Turks.
